Our 2010 ‘Eloquent’ Syrah is 100% Beaucastel Clone, this vintage marks the last Bernat Estate Syrah containing this particular French clone. The vines that carried the Beaucastel Syrah have since been grafted over to our yet to be released Estate Cabernet Sauvignon! Aromas of smoke, pepper, red clay, black berry pie and stewed cherries dominate the nose. The palate effuses a smoked beef-jerky characteristic that has become synonymous with Syrahs from the Rhone Valley of France. Black cherry, blueberry, and bramble fruits harmonize with resolute tannins and a slate driven earth quality. Though the hue is slightly softer than its ‘Intrigue’ counterpart, ‘Eloquent’ is still a bold, masculine red wine..

Our 2012 Grenache Blanc comes from Camp 4 Vineyard. Situated on the east end of Santa Ynez Valley, just outside of Happy Canyon, this site’s Mediterranean climate and alluvial soil is a perfect match for heat-loving Grenache Blanc. Opening with fruit-driven aromatics of Anjou pear, mandarin orange, and lime oil, with air it gains subtle nuances of Shiso leaf and wet rocks. While showcasing the grape’s more unctuous texture, it still delivers great cut, with deceptively well-integrated acidity. Only 125 cases produced.

The 2009 Colson Canyon Syrah exhibits an inky purple core moving to ruby red at the rim. Lifted aromatics of black cherry, brambleberry and macerated cherries are accented by notes of espresso and baking spices. Lively and powerful, this Syrah exhibits well-integrated tannins with sneaky structure, with great precision and balance. Delicious now, this should evolve beautifully over the next 5 to 7 years.

Nebbiolo is one of our great passion projects. One of the world’s most noble grapes, it is also one of the most challenging to grow and work with in the cellar: it has to hang out until almost Thanksgiving, its acid is through the roof, tannins are fierce, and it requires a long stay in barrel and bottle before release. But when it’s finally ready to unfurl and show its stuff? Fuhgeddaboutit- this is haunting, heady, obsession-inducing stuff. Our 2010 shows off the grape’s classic notes of tar and roses, joined to a noticeable kiss of California sunshine and generosity of fruit. As always, this is incredibly well-structured, and works beautifully at table. We wouldn’t be surprised to see this age gracefully over the next two decades.

Double Gold San Francisco Chronicle
Historically, our Beaucastel and Shiraz clones have undergone fermentation and barrel aging separately, and are then blended for bottling. The 2010 ‘Intrigue’ is the future of Syrah for the Bernat Estate - from this vintage on, all Bernat Estate Syrah wine will be 100% Shiraz clone. Even with the 2010 vintage’s record breaking cool season, this release is powerful with an expressive fruit dominated palate. Exhibiting succulent blue and black fruits integrated with licorice, coriander, and fresh cut tobacco. Structured tannins are present, though they are less overt than the ‘Eloquent’ Syrah. ‘Intrigue’ is certainly the female of the two estate Syrah expressions. It’s soft, curvy edges, lush fruit, and supple tannins result in a quite alluring wine.
